Nature Spot on Jukskei River Opened to Public. (27 November, 1996)

A new 800 ha recreational area along the Jukskei River a few minutes' drive from the Johannesburg city centre was opened to the public yesterday. AECI's Modderfontein Conservation Park was first set aside in 1987. Since then various rehabilitation projects have seen the reintroduction of animals, inlcluding antelope species and zebra, the eradication of alien vegetation and the planting of more than 10 000 indigenous trees as well as shrubs and grass.

A special feature of the park is a dam, constructed as a breeding area for birds. Fish eagles are among the more than 200 species that can be seen from two hides overlooking the dam. The heart of the conservation park is Isidleke, an interpretation centre from where environmental workshops are run. The facilities are also available to all schools. In addition, the 'Modderfontein Experience' offers a range of education modules designed around specific sections of the Std 4 science, geography, English and history syllabi.

The programme is versatile and allows individual schools to select modules according to their needs, interests and even the seasons. A special course for Std 9 looks at the nitrogen cycle, a key chemical in many of AECI's activities. In addition, Isidleke, with its wonderful outdoor patios overlooking the dam, restored barn and hunting lodge dating back to the 1890s, can be hired. In terms of the Explosives Act, access to the park is limited, and anyone interested in visiting the area will have to apply for access.
